Oxidative Therapies

Oxidative medicine is an exciting way of treating the body. It is based upon the science of redox (reduction and oxidation) reactions in the body. At a cellular level, all biochemical reactions are driven by the passing of an electron from one molecule to another. Oxidation refers to the accepting of an electron from a donor molecule. This passing of an electron is akin to a runner passing a baton to the next runner. If there is nobody else to pass the baton to, the runner tires out, and the reactions slow down or cease.

The final acceptor of the electron in this chain is oxygen. This is termed aerobic respiration, and is very important to the body. When adequate molecules of oxygen are present, the body cells are able to produce 38 molecules of ATP by driving this electron transport chain. In the absence of oxygen, this chain produces a mere 4 molecules of ATP. Once can see that a lack of oxygen and oxidative factors can lead to a slowing of the system at a whole body level.

The actual process of administering the therapy entails the intravenous administration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) or ozone (O3). The body is quickly able to break down either compound into H2O and O- or O2 and O-. It is this “singlet oxygen molecule (O-) that donates an electron to spark the system, and oxygen that will complete the chain.

The procedure is a simple intravenous drip which takes less than an hour to administer. It has been used for decades in thousands of patients with a tremendous safety profile.
